50cc dirt bikes for kids age review
If you want to start a great family hobby of riding dirt bikes and you have young children, this article will help if you have children under 6 years old. In this article I going to look at what age is a 50cc dirt bike for?
What age is a 50cc dirt bike for? Children from the age of 4 can safely ride 50cc dirt bikes, but they may need training wheels when they first start. If your kids start from a young age on an electric dirt bike, there’s no reason why they won’t be riding a 50cc dirt bike quite easily aged 5 or 6 without training wheels.
You may be surprised to learn that children as young as 3 years old can ride small dirt bikes, but I suggest at this age it’s on an electric dirt bike rather than a 50cc petrol dirt bike.
What age is a 50cc dirt bike for?
The best way to answer the question about what age 50cc dirt bikes are for, is to look at certain aspects of your children. These include:
- Whether they already have any dirt bike experience.
- How mature or grown up they are as a young child.
- How big they are physically.
- What level of control you have over the dirt bike whilst they learn.
- Where your child is able to use their 50cc dirt bike.
- How fast does the 50cc dirt bike go.
Prior dirt bike experience
If your 4-6 year old already has some experience on a dirt bike, for example on an electric dirt bike, then there’s no reason why they can’t ride a 50cc dirt bike.
Similarly, if your child is older than 6 years old, but hasn’t had any dirt bike riding experience then I suggest you may not want to put them straight on a 50cc dirt bike.

What I’d say is that it’s not necessarily about the cc size of the dirt bike, but more about your young kid’s prior experience.
The maturity of your child
It may seem strange to be talking about the the maturity of your child when we are probably discussing 5, 6 or perhaps 7 year olds. But it’s true that some children are more mature than others. Some are more sensible and behave in a way you can trust them. Whereas others may be more immature and need to have parental supervision.
With regards to the age for a 50cc dirt bike and their ‘age maturity‘, it is you that will know your child as the parent. This is especially true if you are also a dirt bike rider yourself. You know what it takes to ride a bike off-road. So you need to translate this to your young child.
If however, you’ve never ridden a dirt bike yourself, thorn this is a little more tricky!
How big your child is physically
The physical size and strength of your child is important. Dirt biking is a physical sport and is quite demanding. Not only that, different dirt bikes come with varying seat heights. You not only need to look at the bike’s cc, which in this case we are discussing 50cc dirt bikes, but also the seat height.
I’ve included below the table of dirt bikes I included in my article on the best dirt bikes for 6 year olds. Four of these were 50cc (or in fact 49cc) dirt bikes, whilst the other two are electric equivalent dirt bikes.

What level of control you have over the dirt bike whilst they learn
Some dirt bikes, which is especially true of electric dirt bikes, are able to be controlled by you as the parent. The control you have is over the top speed of the dirt bike.
This is important so that your child doesn’t go careering off at top speed and hurt themselves when they are just beginning.
In the above list, both the electric bikes have a way for the parent to control the top speed. You’ll be able to gradually increase the speed of the bike as your child improves their confidence and ability.
Of the other 50cc dirt bikes in the table, it’s also the Honda CRF50F that has parental control too. This 50cc kids dirt bike has a manual throttle limiter you can adjust as your child improves. This allows you to buy a 50cc petrol dirt bike and allow the bike to build the confidence of your son or daughter safely.
Where your child is able to use their 50cc dirt bike
Of course the most important part of having a dirt bike is being able to use it. But safely too. Some of the 50cc dirt bikes in the above list are quite powerful, for example the KTM 50SX 2020 can reach speeds of 72kph (45mph), which is fast.
72 kph (45mph) isn’t the type of speed you want your kid doing on a 50cc dirt bike in a small backyard I suggest.
So you need somewhere for your kid to ride their dirt bike safely and where others aren’t going to get annoyed.
How fast does a 50cc dirt bike go?
As you note from the above table, the range of speeds for these selected 50cc dirt bikes is from 24kph (15mph) to 72kph (45mph).
So it’s probably true to say that a 50cc dirt bike can go to speeds of up to 72kph (45mph).
50cc dirt bike with training wheels
You can either buy a 50cc dirt bike with training wheels already installed, or you can buy a 50cc dirt bike and retro fit them afterwards.
Here are some examples of dirt bike training wheels on eBay.
